In this era of the internet; it is imperative that we protect our children online in the same manner as we do in the real world. For parents; it is of great significance to guide children in using the internet, teaching them its merits and demerits. Children should use the internet as a tool to gain positive experiences online, learn and use it safely.

The internet opens up an exciting world of opportunities for children and the whole family. The internet is a source of entertainment, education and information. Exposure to various cultures and ways of life online, interacting with people from different countries opens up endless possibilities. It expands the horizons of children on a whole. Being online means there are no borders that need to be breached. The use of the internet involves risks and challenges that need to be addressed, particularly in the case of children. Parents have to realize and know about what kind of content their kids view online.

Children can be exposed to content that is explicitly violent; prohibited or illegal. They are at risk of experiencing cyber bullying or being contacted by strangers. Children can get into serious trouble by revealing a lot about themselves by giving out personal information to strangers online; unknowingly. Two kidnapping cases have come to the forefront in Pakistan in the last year or so. The use of internet is growing among children because of exposure to smartphones and tablets.

Guidelines for parents for keeping their children safe online:

1)     Observe what content is being viewed and watched online by your children.

2)      Learn about the technologies that your children are using, educate yourself well in regards to it.

3)      Talk to your children about using the internet and tell them to share their experiences with you. Be friendly and cooperative while having a discussion to make them feel secure. Explain them, the risks and benefits of the content being viewed online.

4)      Reach to an agreement with your children in regards to internet usage; time limitations can be put in place. Use of internet should not be allowed before going to bed for example?

5)      The computer should be placed in a family area of the home for example the hallway or lounge.

6)      Smartphones, tablet usage should only be allowed in your presence only. Applications and games installed being played on them should be thoroughly checked for any violence or content that is ‘inappropriate’ for your children.

7)      No personal family information or photographs should be shared online without the consent and permission of the parents.

8)      Install an internet filter.

9)      Encrypt your home Wi-fi network with strong passwords and do not share them with your children.

10)  Monitor any explicit changes in behavior of your children after using the internet. Take them into confidence, discuss the issues that are hampering him to help them alleviate their pain.

Emotions and its Impact

Emotions are meant to be embraced and felt to understand the depths of it. Emotions have a wide array of features, they induce the mind with feelings that can be positively exciting and negatively taxing. Emotions are a part and parcel of our daily lives and it can be very difficult at times to detach from them. They ensure and are a broad indicator of the fact that we are humans and not mechanized robots.

In times of depravity, darkness and full of sadness; emotions are what that keep us alive and kicking. Emotions vary from person to person, some believe     in showing them outright and others shun from revealing them, a typical human trait. Emotions can be taxing for a human mind, but at the very same time it can be a stress reliever too! At times we hear people saying that those who embrace emotions are nothing but fools. Are we supposedly going to take other people’s views and judgements into account and does it even count? The majority including me, take the judgement of others as a benchmark and give it a lot of significance. Are we in any way, liable to explain the reasons for our emotions and feelings to others, are we being influenced by their take on us? Is it worth our while, to think and stress ourselves over our emotions, where we went wrong etc.

There is a considerable debate over whether emotions should be controlled in ‘certain’ circumstances or situations or whether should we exercising more restraint in showing them. Does practicality suffice more over emotions when making critical decisions? Should emotions only drive our entire lives? It is a very difficult notion to apprehend about because it entirely depends on each individual’s nature and the circumstances and position they are in and emotions differ at every stage of life. A critical decision made purely based on emotions does backfire mostly, and alternatively a more pragmatic and practical approach would be more suited to the current scenario and eventually prevail.

Emotions can make us weak and more prone to being misused and end up being disappointed. Emotions can never be measured or benchmarked and its calculated use is nigh impossible. Emotions should never be suppressed entirely, it cannot be sub-planted with something different because it is a part and parcel of human nature. Emotions in relationships can be challenging, whether it is with friends, siblings or cousins. Managing emotions is an uphill task and something which is difficult to control at times. Emotions have their peaks and troughs, they have to be counterbalanced with reality and a more practical approach towards dealing with certain situations. Circumstances can drive our emotions and influence the way we act, behave and conduct ourselves. To sum it up, emotions are a necessity; period!

Net Neutrality in Pakistan

The guiding principle to the preservation of a free and open internet is “Net Neutrality”. It means that ISP’s may not discriminate between different kinds of content and applications online. It guarantees a level playing field for all websites and internet technologies. The question arises as to how we should apply the concept of “Net Neutrality” in the context of Pakistan. Net Neutrality has primarily garnered a lot of attention in the United States, and has been the subject of intense scrutiny and various lawsuits over the last 4 years or so. My focus is to make it relevant in the context of Pakistan and how can it affect us in the longer scheme of things.

In Pakistan, many would argue the concepts very mention would be nonsensical and idiotic. Our telecom and internet sector is predominantly dominated by PTCL; one of the largest providers of fixed line telephone, broadband and wireless internet services. Besides being in the business of providing the aforementioned services, PTCL is also involved in leasing bandwidth to all major ISP’s operating in Pakistan. Majority of the submarine cables landing in Pakistan, are owned by a consortium of telecom companies including PTCL which is a major stakeholder in it. Besides it, the only company providing bandwidth leasing services to ISP’s is Transworld Alliance ie TWA. This gives PTCL a whopping control over the whole telecom sector.  It stifles competition and gives them absolute price setting power and ability to manipulate the market to their whim. Since the advent of mobile providers like Telenor, Warid and China Mobile, the market opened up to healthy competition bringing down the call rates that were quite exorbitant before the deregulation of the telecom sector in 2004. Before this, Mobilink was the sole provider of GSM services in Pakistan for almost 10 years since 1994/95.  It virtually controlled the Pakistani market in the presence of providers like Paktel and Instaphone.

The critical aspect to understand is the unlimited control that PTCL is exhibiting in the realm of internet services in Pakistan. A key indicator is the growing use of VOIPs and preference of cellphone usage in Pakistan. Due to low calling rates, the use of fixed line telephony services has reduced drastically in comparison to the ease of access offered by cellphones. This has hurt PTCL revenues sharply in the last decade since it was sold to Etisalat in 2005. Due to exploding growth of smartphones and widespread Wi-Fi internet access availability in the urban areas, the use of VOIP services like Skype, Viber has grown tremendously. Due to the ease of convenience that it offers and the biggest thing is, it are free! As per net neutrality, PTCL should be offering a level playing field to all competitors and not prioritize their fixed line services which is in effect; detrimental to the consumer.  Due to exponential growth in VOIP services, PTCL has blocked the ability to make calls over Skype to landline numbers abroad which is a gross violation of the principles of net neutrality. Degradation in services like Skype and Viber which people use to contact their loved ones abroad causes significant hurdles for the consumers. It forces them to use fixed line or wireless telephony services to contact them instead. Alternatives do exist, but the majority using Skype or Viber like applications do not possess the knowledge or are tech savvy enough to determine which other services to use instead.

Interestingly, another example of net neutrality could be a deal signed by PTCL with the Jang Group of Newspapers, who own the famous television channel Geo, and the English newspaper; The News. This would involve the Jang Group paying PTCL money to offer prioritized internet traffic to its news portals like Geo.tv and TheNews.com.pk during peak hour usage. For example in the evening when people come back home and log onto the web and access news websites. This could happen possibly that competing websites like ARY and Dunya news websites either would be very slow to access due to a deliberate slowdown in internet traffic by PTCL. This would force the consumers frustratingly to switch to websites like Geo which are readily, easily accessible due to the prioritized speeded up traffic being provided by the ISP. This ultimately would work to the benefit of PTCL, which would either hatch up a package offering speeded up internet access in form of a paid upgrade to the consumers, or offer tiered internet services depending on the level of usage of the customer. A customer or even a company in need of speedy internet access would hop onto this bandwagon and save themselves from the misery of slow internet access on websites that they want to access. This would mean more revenue and profits could be generated by PTCL and make it immune to competition. And hence it will not make significant investments in its infrastructure to provide better internet services to the customer. PTCL would know it well when they can rake in significant revenue by just hatching up prices and slowing down internet access deliberately. In a market totally dominated by them who would dare challenge them? Even the government due to the significant market share and fear of investor unrest would not take on the behemoth known as PTCL and would put its hand up.

The mention about video streaming and IP TV access in respect of net neutrality was purposely ignored. Till now the level of streaming and data consumption in Pakistan is not comparable to the West; due to a lack of high speed internet access. With the advent of 3G and 4G services; whose licenses are being auctioned shortly; Net Neutrality will garner significant importance and the netizens of Pakistan will realize what lies ahead of us as the use of data services would grow exponentially in the coming few years.

Tolerance: A Personal Perspective

Tolerance resides within us, we do not tend to give it the significance it is worthy of in our daily lives. Seldom do we realize; that tolerance is virtue and we blindly refuse to follow and infuse it within ourselves. In this day and age, where our tolerance levels have alarmingly reached to almost non-existent levels; even preaching tolerance is denounced. I ask why? What are the reasons for not practicing tolerance? Does tolerance cost us money; is it detrimental to our health? Is being tolerant a cause of embarrassment? Intolerance is what hinders our society as a whole; and stops us from progressing further as a nation.

I have always wondered and felt despondent over the fact that why tolerance is being sidelined by all of us and in its place we practice aggression and a policy of complete ignorance on this matter. Is tolerance that difficult to practice that we are not realizing the long term damage that we are doing on ourselves as a society. Peace and harmony are giving way to aggression and violence and repression of individuals; hatred is rising and societal upheaval is increasing. An act of tolerance employed at a critical stage can be the difference between peace and violence. I personally feel that preaching and practicing tolerance in our society is equitable to being classified as a hypocrite and a person who does not have the guts to stand up for what he/ she feels is right. As it can be seen from the traffic on the roads here in Lahore; nobody is willing to tolerate and withstand the wait on traffic lights and motorcyclists especially right, left and center are waving around trying to move as quickly as possible and make their way to their desired destination. People on cars are honking like anything to make the traffic move in peak hours and are not tolerant of the fact that million others like them in the city are as keen to reach their homes too. Waiting is something that our society as a whole refuses to practice and that is a result of a lack of patience and tolerance for others that gives rise to this problem.

Now coming to tolerance on Social Media and the consequences and backlash that we can face. Normally I tend to keep a minimalistic and a very neutral view point on social media and in most cases tend to mind my own business and practice a decent amount of tolerance. Surprisingly my tolerant stance on politics and my refusal to speak up has been a cause of immense displeasure for other people who I follow and they follow me. In a personal context, I feel certain subjects are taboo and so sensitive to speak up about that a single statement of mine which may be right in a certain context but can cause a flurry of adverse comments and counter-arguments that why did you say that etc. I personally do not care what people think of me and why should I be satisfying them in the first place. If I prefer discretion and keeping tolerant views on certain subjects it is MY CHOICE, as simple as that. I do not expect others to follow my views and embrace them wholeheartedly.

Everyone has a right to disagree with me endorsing tolerance on a large scale, but yes everything has its limitations and same is the case with tolerance. If the limitations of tolerance are breached by somebody; you are within your right to say I have had enough of your crap and speak up and tell the person to please keep their trap shut before they face undue consequences. Breaching of limitations applies in every sphere of life and tolerance is no different. Striking a balance in regards to tolerance may be quite difficult but as humans we can always strive to practice it as much as we can. Heeding to the call of tolerance will not cost us anything and probably in the longer run can help us maintain our peace of mind!

Internet And Bannistan In Pakistan

I was ceased to be amazed by the censorship policies of our telecom authority ie PTA. Three very well respected technology websites Gizmodo.com, Lifehacker.com and TheVerge.com were blocked by our ISP’s on the instructions of PTA. I was flabbergasted and overawed by the audacious and stupid ban put in place on these very good sources of information for technology related news and happenings.  These websites as far I have known have never housed any disconcerting content that would give rise to it being deemed ‘harmful or inappropriate’. If the authorities feel that these websites mentioned above are responsible for hosting “objectionable” content; a reasonable explanation should suffice detailing every aspect of why these websites were blocked in the first place; and what kind of content did they deem was objectionable which led to the blockage or ban on these websites.

Everything is under the radar of the state; massive surveillance and privacy violations are being conducted on a daily basis and rights to freedom of speech being curtailed on the internet. The blocking of websites is the first of many missteps that the state undertakes to block the right to access as basic a thing as information on the internet. The absence of any clear guidelines and policies and a sudden blocking of a website is not only erroneous but also practically stupid so to speak. The websites that are hosting transparent and harmless content in nature and are in no way offensive or harmful to the States very existence; why the hell is it blocked? Is there a legitimate reason to block these websites without any prior notification? Is there any mechanism under existence to ban or block these websites? Do any kind of legislations exist in the power of the state to empower the telecom authority to block any website at their whim without any practical reasoning? Are notifications issued to the ISP’s or an official press release made by the concerned stakeholders that a certain website or websites have been blocked due to this and this reason?

In these circumstances; a pronounced absence of laws and guidelines for blocking websites is just mind boggling. One fine morning, we get up and see a website we view daily is blocked! Then the very next day it is ‘miraculously’ unblocked!! The formulation of polices and guidelines is an utmost necessity in this digital day and age; laws need to be enacted by Parliament and passed through so a proper mechanism is in place to facilitate the closure or blockage of these websites. On a personal level; I am not in favour of disbanding or blocking any websites and denying the netizens of the right to access information in any given way. Blockage ensues frustration at a level even for genuine purposes; like people doing research who have to view Youtube to view a specific video that is interlinked to their work and also for example upcoming musicians; startups etc who have to rely on free mediums to disseminate information about their specific ventures. Due to these blockages; various pedigrees of business and upcoming artists and talents that need the medium to showcase their talents are being curtailed; unnecessarily. The underlying frustration of those ‘genuine’ users is to circumvent these blockades and resort to using Virtual Private Networks or proxies to access these ‘banned’ websites.

Absurd bans like these make no sense at all and have no valid reasoning and explanation. If for some apparent reason; the websites mentioned above are guilty of hosting content that the State finds ‘objectionable’ to its liking; it can take the step of simply blocking that particular URL and not blocking the whole DAMN WEBSITE! Emancipation of information is being curtailed by the State at every level and it is their prerogative to deprive the netizens of their basic rights to access it. Blocking and massive filtration of the internet will not stop the seeds of discontentment from sprouting up. Proactive policies need to be formulated in regards to the Internet in Pakistan; guidelines need to be developed and a framework promulgated to ‘Censor’ content if NEEDED! By blocking websites which emanate knowledge and add value in every respect of the word; it will only harm us in the longer run.

The internet is also a great resource of learning; besides the ‘Objectionable’ content it also houses according to the said morals and virtues of our State. If the State encourages instead of discouraging the people to view the internet; it can help the populace to be empowered in every given way whether it is in the field of education; the economy and it will only add value and make them that much aware of the happenings in the world. The internet can galvanize a revolution of knowledge and learning in Pakistan; and with a massive chunk of the 180 million population under the age of 25, we have to encourage the use of the internet proactively. Bannistan is not the solution to our problems; it only aggravates them!

Self Doubt & Negativity

The narrative of this short write up is to discuss the abundance of negativity that we surround ourselves with and in the process tend to move so deep into it that our stubbornness becomes embedded within it. Ruthlessness has no excuse and frustrations increase with the passage of time. A lot of blame for that lies with us and we lack a potential framework to mitigate all these self doubts that plague our minds. The biggest gripe that I have had with myself over the years is the perception that the whole damn world is against me and nobody understands me and my feelings and I indulge deliberately in casting light on myself as a martyr.

The reasons for these aspersions with many of us are our negative thoughts that cloud our judgment and hamper our ability to think and reason logically. The first step towards removing these gripes is a pronounced approach towards tackling these issues with an iron fist and developing a stringent methodology to help us overcome it. Thinking alone is a massive brain drainer in itself and is the root cause for my performance to go from midyoker to very poor. Our overall frame of mind dwelves into harbouring negative thoughts and ignore the good things that life has gifted us with. We deliberately do not want to see the positive side of things, because that would give us an opportunity to see life in its truest form.. Nothing is more apocryphal than the presence of self doubt in our minds which creates such an imploding situation that there is a high probability that we ourselves light that match to take ourselves to self destruction. Who needs enemies when we are the one hell bent upon destroying ourselves!!

Self doubt is one of the gravest dangers that a human mind can harbour and it consumes us from within. When you embrace self doubt as a system of mass exodus in your mind and soul, you tend to go into a limbo and all thoughts that you nurture are negatively oriented and self delusional. This extends to us hallucinating and imagining things and considering the whole of humanity is plotting something or the other against us. Presuming of all things leads us to damaging our self in the immediate aftermath of this but what we do not tend to realize is in the context of our overall relationships with our family and friends which suffers as an outcome. The best explanation of this ruthless virulent is the large scale damage it renders as a result. We are ourselves as an outcome of our own ridiculous perceptions and negativity, tend to enforce our destructive policies on the relationships that matter most to us and torture them and blackmail them purposely to extract maximum gains for ourselves. Self doubt and negativity actually makes us more selfish and more prone to making decisions which only benefit us and greed kicks in as an aftermath of it.

Nothing is more injurious to our self prestige than doubting ourselves. It adds no value to our lives and neither does it give us any benefits. Self doubt and negativity only adds more fuel to the fire and prolongs our agony and keeps us away from the reality and beauties of life. image

When The Cradle Is Empty

Credit goes to a very good friend who wrote this article who declines to be identified so I am sharing it on my blog.

There is an emptiness in my womb that I so desperately wish to fill, with a mass of cells called a fetus that millions of ungrateful people throw away or avoid with a pill, there’s an aching emptiness in my breast. Sometimes, I fell the phantom milk filling me – and I ache for the weight of a child in my loving arms – to suckle and rest. Dear God! I am empty and it hurts – unbearably so…. R. Marie Taylor

Pregnancy is a sign of missed periodic cycle of menstruation each month where you watch your body and examine your feelings, looking for signs of becoming a mother. If your period is late, your spirits rise, only to be dashed. You go to the loo every five minutes, looking for a drop of blood. You go through these cycles of emotions month after month.  You begin to ask yourself what’s wrong with you, is this disease or a sign of better future.  You feel you have no control over your body or your life, nothing is left with you. Conception can become an obsession, and you start to feel isolated.

It looks as a nightmare when you have a problem in this natural process. You might try to deny it.  You pretend that this is not really happening to you, may think of striving too hard or not at all for it.  Maybe you really don’t want that baby is all you think about.  Around you, everyone else seems to be pregnant and you can’t believe how easy it is for them.  You begin to feel angry with your body for letting you down. You want to kill yourself and regret all around you. The world seems to be with you for a while and may go against when you think of yourself as being “an empty cradle” or being an infertile, and it’s social and psychological effects. Was it me or my husband, who is responsible for my empty womb?

If a woman has not become pregnant after a year of trying, they may have a fertility problem, and it is worth seeking medical help.  If the woman is over 35 (Infertility Support & Advocacy), it may be a good idea to start checking things out even earlier, for e.g. after six to nine months of unprotected sex.  Infertility investigations can sometimes take a long time, even years.  If you put off seeking help early, you could be leaving it too late. Infertility is of two types, primary and secondary. Primary infertility is described, as couple has never been able to conceive a pregnancy, after at least 1 year of unprotected intercourse. Whereas, secondary pregnancy describes as couples who have previously been pregnant at least once, but not have been able to achieve another pregnancy. According to Daily Times Newspaper, “the prevalence of primary infertility is 3.4% and secondary infertility is 18.4% in Pakistan”. Infertility arises due to multiple reasons in males and females, such as, vasectomy, dysfunctional ejaculation, sexual organ anomalies, hormonal disorders, autoimmune (antibody) disorders, sexually transmitted diseases, endometriosis, ovulation disorder, premature menopause, polycystic ovarian disease, uterine fibroids and polyps.

Most of the couples get shocked when they explore that they are infertile and commonly feel socially isolated. Infertility has great impact on social life of men and women. Firstly, the emotional upheaval of infertility can cause relationship distress, communication crisis, sexual difficulties, and isolation. Sometimes, one partner doesn’t agree for particular treatment which can makes other partner feel lack of love, ignored and impulsiveness. The fear to be left alone by another partner is very disturbing for the spouse. Sometimes, they force to get divorce by fertile partner to give a happy life without them. According to Brozan (1982), “most couples feel their relationship has become stronger simply from having come through this crisis. It has forced them to confront the major issue of their lives.” On the other side, the stress on relationship is sometimes so high that spouse tries to involve in extra marital affair to prove their fertility and self-worthiness.

Secondly, Social stigmatization is always attached to infertility since Stone Age. Previously, it was considered as punishment for an individual’s sins. In many societies, women considered as a machine of producing babies. If woman can’t work like that then society blame her and stigmatizes her as worthless person of society who cannot be a source of happiness for her husband and family. Social stigmatization also develops in men and forces them to keep their infertility as a secret and hinder them to seek medical help.

In psychological point of view, parenthood is the big dream for any couple’s life and a big transition period for both genders. Unfortunately, if this wish doesn’t fulfill then the couple might face emotional stress, guilt, anger, depression, and low self-esteem. Sometimes, couples also try to commit suicide to prove themselves innocent and helpless. Depression can also effect on physiology of infertility that is shown in different studies. “One study of 10 depressed and 13 normal women suggests that depression is associated with abnormal regulation of leutinizing hormone, a hormone that regulated ovulation. (Meller, 1997). Further studies are still in progress to find out that there is an association between stress and behavioral changes i.e. low libido, smoking, and alcohol use, which can cause secondary infertility. Sleep disturbances is also effect of stress related to infertility.

Overall, couples with fertility problems have different responses to their situations, and different ways of dealing with them.  Under such conditions, more often, they feel an extraordinary isolation, being surrounded by friends and family who all seem to have children, or are becoming pregnant.  They can feel their life is ’out of control’, since the part which they took so much for granted, their ability to have a baby, is now in the hands of doctors and scientists.  They often experience pressure from well-meaning friends or family who constantly ask when they are going to start a family.  Many choose to keep their fertility problems a secret.  Infertility is a situation of loss which can go on for years, and it can be difficult to deal with constant sadness in their lives.  Often the male partner deals with this sadness in a different way to the female partner, and this can be difficult to understand.  Men commonly don’t talk as much as women do, and don’t always express their feelings as openly as women. The feelings of both partners, however, can be very intense, and people sometimes say that they think they must be going insane until they talk to other infertile couple who describe similar feelings, and realize that they are, in fact, very normal. More often, couples who share their problem are more stable then the ones blaming their partner being infertile.

So, sharing this problem with the right person is very important in the whole process to resolve it completely…

A Rural Woman Sexually Abused

I still remember the day when I visited a women prison in interior Sindh and met a young lady who was in her twenties. The girl had wheatish complexion, twinkling big eyes, soft voice but she was looking lost in her thoughts and she was wandering here and there. By looks, she had an innocent face with the hope of justice in her eyes. My astonishment was at peak when I saw her toddler (baby girl) in her lap who was crying and irritating her mother. I think, the toddler was not happy with the prison environment and she could smell the pungent fragrance of punishment being the baby of a prisoner. Suddenly, so many questions popped up in my mind related to this lady i.e. why the lady is here? what is her crime? Is she guilty or innocent? What would have been the circumstances which forced her to commit crime? Amidst of so many queries, I decided to talk to her regarding her life and her miseries.

When I started to talk to her I observed that apparently, she was friendly to her acquaintances but she had hidden so many sorrows in her heart. As soon as I asked her reason of being here in this prison, her emotions exploded, her eyes filled-in with tears as she was waiting for someone to ask about her sufferings. Upon asking further, she said that she is being held under trial for the murder of the Wadera. Basically, she got a divorce from her husband after 2 years of marriage during her pregnancy. Soon after her divorce, she was kidnapped by the feudal lord, who had kept his evil eyes on her since childhood. The feudal lord illegally kept the lady in his custody for about 6 months and as per the lady, she delivered a baby girl during this time period. In the mentioned time period, feudal lord abused her sexually and physically. When the lady’s cousin came to know about the whole scenario, they murdered the Feudal Lord for his evil deeds. The lady with his cousins were arrested by the police and since then, they were waiting for justice to be done.

The whole story indicates the existent shortcomings of our society, discrimination that is usually faced by innocent people at the hands of our so-called feudal lords who have the ability to twist and abuse women sexually to satisfy their evil desires. It is a pity that no law is in place to arrest these animals who hound innocent young village women to fulfill their lust and traumatize them.

The lady under trial, what was her crime? Nobody, even spared a thought for the fact that what must be she going through and what effect the sexual abuse must have had on her mind! And instead of being the perpetrated she is being accused of being the perpetrator!! What a mockery of justice is this and I can only laugh at the authorities who have held her under arrest and jailed her for the murder of the Feudal Lord!!!

The Feudal Lord, who had held this poor woman for months and sexually abused her to the whim to satisfy his lust, doesn’t it count as a crime? The poor lady was repeatedly abused sexually and physically for a couple of months but instead of being a case of Gender based violence, it had been converted into a HOMICIDE. The investigating authorities, the police and various other departments must have been involved in the cover up of this heinous act and must have taken indulgences from the Feudal Lord’s family due to their significant influence.

Nobody gave a thought that why the family of the accused never filed an F.I.R to the Police after her disappearance? I personally believe that the family must have received immense threats from the Landlord and were told to face dire consequences if any move was made to report it to the relevant authorities. This highlights the fact that in villages or rural areas alike there is no proper mechanism to

report these abuses and that’s why the ratio of reported cases is extra-ordinarily low. These cases either don’t get enough coverage or are kept under wraps for the sheer impact it will have on the woman and may end up tarnishing her image. As it is known, our society looks upon these women as a source of contempt or something that is trash.

This polluted mindset shows how narrow minded our people are or have become and I have read about cases where even the families of those women abused refused to support  and look at them with a source of contempt!!! What is her fault if she had been sexually abused and assaulted and picked up and locked in a cellar for 6 months for example? The sexually abused women who expect to be supported by their own kin in the most dire of moments and when they leave them high and dry what effect would it have on her and what thoughts would be crossing her mind? She would be in a state of duress and this could force her to commit suicide because she would be getting a feeling of being unwanted and a burden on society and when in such a traumatic state after having suffered so much abuse her ability to think clearly and reason would have left her. At this critical stage, support from the family and friends has great significance and although the scars left behind and the mental aspect can never be fully healed. For her, the mind would cast back to the hideous episodes she encountered of being abused and the pain she suffered and those sporadic thoughts would always convolute her mind and especially while sleeping she would get nightmares and get up and so much more which even I have no idea how to describe.

The woman abused by the Feudal Lord must be hiding her true pain from others and whisking away those nightmares that have made her life miserable and she must also be thinking about her only child that she has left behind and is being deprived of motherly affection and care. The detrimental thought process of the poor woman must be taken into consideration, and she should be; on pure humanitarian grounds allowed to meet her daughter every day for a few hours so the toddler gets the love she deserves. This step could be a cornerstone in helping the poor woman forget her sorrows and divert her attention to giving her daughter the motherly affection she must have long sought to give and in the process help her bring closer to her daughter she had been separated from for 6 months.

The role of the media also needs due consideration and has an important role to play in such sensitive cases. Mostly, these television channels remain oblivious to these issues because of their sensitivity and refuse to be drawn into such a case which could override the norms of society and which would preferably be kept under wraps so it does not receive undue attention and may engulf a flame of a lot of other cases to come into the limelight which have been hidden for years. Normally the media highlights every issue and sensationalizes it for their own TRP ratings and to gain millions of viewers at the detriment of questionable practices being used and no ethics being followed. The critical evaluation comes why aren’t these issues raised on the media and why are they still considered a taboo in this world of technology and fast communication? If awareness is not increased how will thousands of women take the courage to take actions against those perpetrators who have been responsible for ruining their lives and are still moving around scot free? Is there any guarantee that those perpetrators which amount in the thousands too, will not commit these heinous acts of sexual abuse with other innocent women? They are like animals who are hunting for their prey and when they attack they take

their spoil and leave a desirable impact on the perpetrated and the poor woman is left with horrors and nightmares to fill her nights while trying to sleep!!!

The role of civil society can have a great impact on how these cases of sexual abuse are reported and how their support can help in raising more awareness among the masses. Cases like these; regardless of happening in urban areas or rural areas, need to be highlighted at any cost and not to gain attention but to fight for the cause of all those innocent women who are being preyed upon and then mercilessly sexually abused. It is the duty of civil society to report these cases if it comes to their attention that someone nearby has been victim of sexual abuse and as a responsible citizen and lastly as a human being bring it to attention of the concerned authorities that this horrible incident has taken place. I personally feel that the government has to form a forum or a separate department which specializes only in cases of sexual abuse and also it should form a vigilante department which operates 24/7, 365 days a year. And hotlines should be setup, so over the phone complaints can be registered quickly and appropriate action taken before any untoward incident takes place. Also, this department can be a great source of collecting information from various people who suspect some individuals are involved in these heinous crimes or are partners in crime and these proclaimed offenders can be kept under strict vigilance and their activities monitored so the pattern of their habits is deduced and cases such as these can be prevented from happening at all.

But then the question would arise, how we setup such a department in a distant rural village such as the one involved in this case. I personally feel it is feasible due to the reason that the penetration of cellphones has reached the villages and a mobile signal is available in most places and this department has great chances of thriving there but for that I would like to mention a few points about the part NGO’s can play here.

I am considering NGO’s here in a rural perspective purely so I am neglecting the impact they have on urban areas in cases of sexual abuse and vice versa. NGO’s if in collaboration with the government or local district officers if they cooperate, they can be a source of great ability to train the local populace in the ways on how to report these kind of cases and also raise awareness among them about it. By raising awareness and making them realize that they are also putting women of other families in jeopardy by not reporting these individuals who have already sexually harassed and abused the woman of their family and giving the perpetrator full license to whatever they want devoid of any firm hand of the law capable of taking them down.

But the training and awareness aspect for NGO’s, will be a daunting task because of the reason these Rural villages follow their own rules and customs and seldom welcome outsiders in such kind of cases and are not receptive to change. The key aspect is; their mindsets are so deeply rooted in their own customs that they are averse to any kind of positive change and stick to what they have lived with for a hundred of years. It is not impossible nothing is personally but it is something that will take years to change not in days or months. image
